Background
The word “Thangam” in Tamil means “Gold”. Since the matured grains are golden in colour this variety is known as “Thangam Samba”. This variety is also known to increase the longevity of human beings. A paddy variety named after a metal (Thangam means Gold) and season of cultivation (Samba). It is widely cultivated in Thiruvarur, Tiruchy and Kollimalai areas of Tamilnadu. The ear head of this variety is very long. It is suitable for flooded area cultivation. It also has the ability to withstand natural calamities.
