Vadan Samba
Background
Details of this variety are found in Pazhani copper inscriptions. It has been observed in farmers fields that during drought seasons the modern varieties completely dry and wither away. However, Vadan samba can survive without irrigation even upto a month. The dried up Vadan samba comes alive once the rains arrive. The yields may decrease because of this but the crop is not completely lost like a modern variety. (Vadai in Tamil means smell which indicates rice variety having an aroma). It is widely cultivated in Thiruvannamalai and Puducherry districts.
Special Features
It is highly resistant to pest and disease. It is also highly drought and flood resistant variety and also suitable for rainfed farming. Since the grains shatter, it is important to harvest them when they are still green.
