Neelam Samba
Background
This paddy variety is named after one of the gems and also season of cultivation and is grown in the Chengalpattu region (Neelam means blue colour sapphire bead or grain, Samba-season of cultivation). Details about this variety are mentioned in Siddha medical texts. This variety is largely preferred by lactating mothers in South Indian villages.
Special Features
It is a highly suitable variety for areas which are prone to waterlogging. It is best suited for cultivation in the vicinity of lakes. It is also resistant to Brown plant hopper and Earhead bug. Since the straw is very long it is used as a roofing material.
Nutritional Properties:
It is very high in potassium (237.7 mg/100 g), magnesium and phosphorus.
Therapeutic Properties
This rice has high medicinal value. It improves the immunity power. Rice is given both to pregnant mothers since it has very high calcium content and to lactating mothers since it is shown to increase lactation.
Suggested Dishes
It is suitable as table rice. It is used for making delicious idlis, ideal for nutritious porridge for breakfast.
