This variety was named after the size of the paddy plant. (kuttai– short). This variety is cultivated in Salem and Puducherry areas.

Special Features

Since this is a short duration variety it can be grown in all the three seasons. It can be grown with minimum water. It is highly drought resistant and there should be no waterlogging. It is highly resistant to pests and diseases. The straw of this variety is very sturdy and is preferred as a roofing material. It is still cultivated in those areas where thatched houses are prevalent.

Nutritional Properties

It is high in protein. With respect to minerals, it is high in potassium (291.6 mg/100g), also very high in iron, calcium (50.40 mg/100 g) and zinc (2.50mg/100g)

Therapeutic Properties

The consumption of this rice variety helps children to grow taller and stronger.  It strengthens regenerates and energizes the body, regulates blood pressure, prevents skin diseases and premature ageing. It has low Glycemic Index (52.25).

Suggested Dishes

This red rice variety can used as a table rice. It is deal for preparing Idly, puttu, idiyappam, kuzhipaniyaram and also for the preparation of porridge.
