Kudaivazhai
Background
This paddy variety is named after a plaintain tree and the earheads appear like open umbrellas and hence the name “Kudaivazhai” (Kudai – Umbrella, Vazhai– Plantain tree). Since it cleans the intestine and keeps us healthy, it is also called as Kudalvazhai (Kudal – intestine in Tamil). This variety was widely cultivated in Thiruvarur district.
Special Features
It is a highly suitable variety for water logging areas. Since it grows upto 5 feet and the stem is 2.5 cm thick the straw is used as a roofing material. Since it is a short duration variety, it can be cultivated thrice a year. This can also be cultivated in saline soil.
Nutritional Properties
It is rich in potassium (279 mg/100 gm). It is also very high in iron (7.10mg/100g), calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and zinc.
Therapeutic Properties
It is used for curing stomach related problems, to improve digestion and for diabetic patients (Glycemic index is 66.34). The rice helps to relieve constipation.
Suggested Dishes
It is suitable for making dishes like idly and dosa. Pazahya satham (a day old leftover fermented rice porridge) with this rice is highly nutritious.
