Kitchili refers to a fruit and it derives its name to the resemblance of this fruit.  It has a pale orange thin grain (colour resembling that of a kitchili fruit) with a pleasant aroma.   It is also called as “Thoppikaran Vidhai” or “Porukku Vidhai”. It is widely cultivated in Thiruvallur and Thiruvannamalai districts.

It is highly resistant to pests and diseases and is suitable for rainfed cultivation.
