This variety is named after its colour. (Kappu – a kind of red tint). It is widely cultivated in Puducherry and Kanchipuram areas.

This variety is tolerant to drought, flood, pest and diseases. It is grown in dryland areas and can survive and produce yields even under extreme dry conditions, where no other rice cultivars can survive.
Nutritional Properties
It is very high in iron (7.90 mg/100 gm), calcium and magnesium.
Suggested Dishes
It is preferred as boiled rice. It is also suitable for making dishes like Idly, Dosa and flattened rice (Aval). Pazahya satham with this rice is highly nutritious. This variety is used in the feast given during Seemantham (a ritual conducted during pregnancy).
