Background
The variety derives its name from the black husk (Kala) and a mild salty (Namak) taste. The term Namak indicates that it can also grow well in saline soil areas. Lord Buddha and his disciples were supposed to have consumed this rice variety everyday, which enhanced their longevity. Even now, this variety is widely consumed by Buddhists. Consumption of even small amounts of this rice yields enormous energy.
