Arubatham Kodai
Background
This variety is named after the duration and season of cultivation. (Arubathu – sixty and kodai – summer). The variety is also known as Poongar. It is called women’s rice. It is widely cultivated in Madurai and Nagapattinam districts. The details of this variety is mentioned in Abithana Chinthamani.
Special Feature
It is believed that during the heavy floods in 1952 this variety was able to withstand the floods and gave a reasonable yield to the farmers. It can grow well in saline soils during both droughts and floods.

This rice is rich in fibre content. It is also rich in calcium
Therapeutic Properties
According to folklore it provides strength to pregnant women and enables them to have smooth delivery. Pregnant women are advised to have porridge of this variety every day. It has high zinc content and also provides strength to the cartilage. It gives stamina and health to our body. The variety helps cure hormonal imbalance.
