Recipes using Chakhao Rice

1.Jamun with Manipuri Rice


  • Chakhao rice powder – 1/2cup (100g)
  • Milk powder -40g
  • Milk-1 tsp
  • Nuts- 10 nos
  • Ghee-2 tsp
  • Sugar syrup


  1. Wash and soak Chakhao for 3 hours. 
  2. Filter the water, dry the rice in clean cloth. 
  3. Grind it nicely.
  4. Mix the rice powder, milk powder. 
  5. Add milk and ghee. 
  6. Add nuts and mix well. 
  7. Keep it aside for 5 minutes. 
  8. Prepare the sugar syrup. 
  9. Heat the ghee in kadai. 
  10. Fry the jamun balls in medium flame
  11. Add the jamun in the sugar syrup. 
  12. Let it soak for 4hours. 
  13. Now the Chakhaogula or black rice gulab jamun is ready, try it and enjoy.

2.Manipur Black Rice Payasam


  • Manipur Black Rice (Chakhao rice)  – 1/4 Kg (250g)
  • Coconut -1no
  • Cashews – 25 g
  • Raisins – 25 g
  • Cardamom -4 nos


Soak the rice well for 1 hour. Grind a coconut well in a mixer and take milk 3 times. The first milk will be thick. The second milk is slightly watery and the third milk is very watery. Add jaggery to the third milk and boil it. Mix the boiled rice in it and then add the second milk and mix it without lumps. After adding roasted cashews, raisins and cardamom, add the first milk and mix. Then it will be fragrant. Hot, delicious nutritious payasam is ready.

3. Manipuri Chakhao Amubi rice burger


•          Manipuri Chagao Amubi Rice-1 cup

•          Mayonnaise-3  table spoon

•          Tomato sauce or ketchup-2 table spoon

•          Lettuce-quarter cup

•          Egg-2 or 3 boiled

•          Onion- 1 chopped

•          Tomato- 2 chopped

•          Salt-1/2 tsp

•          Peppers-1 tsp


Take a cup and fill cooked black rice into it. Invert the cup and press the cup on to a greased plate to get bun shapes. Repeat the process till you have 6 buns. In a pan heat oil and place the black rice buns and fry till lightly brown on both sides. Set the fried buns on a paper towel. Mix together all the patty ingredients in a bowl. Divide the mixture into 3 equal portions and shape each into a patty. Fry the meat patty on medium heat on both sides. Once patty is done lay the buns, spread mayonnaise and ketchup on black rice bun bottoms. Add lettuce, tomato, onion, sliced eggs and salt and pepper to taste. Assemble the burgers with black rice buns, meaty gravy, sliced eggs, onions etc
